Hybrid Tweeter

The finest hybrid tweeter module is employed for a transparent and solid rendering of even the most subtle HF details. The module consists of a newly developed 29mm ultra lightweight dome tweeter and a ribbon tweeter. This combination forms the ideal high frequency solution offering the advantages of their unique properties. The hybrid tweeter is employed due to its high power handling, low resonance frequency, and excellent headroom at high intensities and extreme excursions which characterise oversized soft dome tweeters.

For cooling the Epicon 8 uses an ultra-thin magnetic fluid, which has high flux saturation point for greater power handling. The ribbon tweeter covers a relatively wide frequency range and superb dispersion for higher components. The tweeter slowly becomes active above 10 kHz, and fully represents harmonics above 15 kHz, and goes beyond 30 kHz, significantly above the audible range. The tweeter design results in a soundstage with a smooth and wide dispersion in azimuth. The detailing of the faceplate has also been designed for to optimise horizontal dispersion.

Soft Magnetic Compound

Similar to the other Epicon models, this floorstander uses SMC material, due to its ultra-low electrical conductivity and high magnetic conductivity. Using SMC reduces distortion caused by the mechanical loss in the magnet system. By using the SMC material prevents the induction of modulating magnet fields, and lowers the eddy current on the pole piece caused by movement of the voice coil. Consequently, the resulting reduction of distortion is measurable and audible.

Wood Fibre Cone

Building on extensive loudspeaker driver design and with engineers skilled in loudspeaker drivers manufacturing, Dali established in-house production of drivers almost a decade ago. Using wood fibre has been shown to be important for reproducing the dynamism and fine detail of your music with very little loss of information. The wooden fibres add rigidity to lightweight paper cones, ensuring non-uniform break-up characteristics.

The result of using wood fibre technology is a structural stiffness giving improved high frequency representation. The wood fibre cone terminates with a rubber surround that is fitted to a die cast aluminium chassis. Dali produces the driver components, such as the voice coil, the cone, surround, and the chassis using precision tools to ensure the drivers are aligned perfectly and accurately.

Rigid Construction

The cabinet acts as an acoustically tuned ‘spring’ for the drivers, which eliminates resonant energy. The sides, top and front baffle, are heated in a manner that allows the material to be press into an organic shape. The design of the cabinet increases its rigidity and significantly reduces the resonance of the cabinet. Furthermore, any standing waves are practically eliminated because there are no parallel surfaces for reflecting.

Curved Shape

The dual-layered front baffle, measures 33mm to ensure that the driver's energy is radiated only as acoustic energy, and no vibration. Plus, the curving the front baffle is also contributing in ensuring the stability of the acoustic platform. At the bottom of the cabinet, there is a hardwired crossover, which has been mounted in its own enclosure free from the pressure variations inside the bass reflex enclosures.

High Quality Finish

The cabinet is finished with a real wood veneer, layered ten times. Each layer is hand polished with a lacquer to give a deep, high gloss and finished elegant surface. The ten amounts of lacquer ensures a sturdy finish, which has a thickness of almost 2mm. Due to the veneer and polishing process the CNC cutting for the ports, the drivers, and the terminals must be done after the lacquer process, to ensure a perfect fit.
